The Ancestral Bridge: A Framework for Shared Cultural Futures between Malaysia's Orang Asli and the Bulang of Yunnan, China
Abstract
The shared future of Malaysia’s Orang Asli and China’s Yunnan indigenous communities can be theorized under "Indigeneity as Practice". This framework is built on identifying common challenges and establishing reciprocal cultural and economic platforms. As a starting point for collaborative advocacy on land rights and environmental preservation, Comparative Indigeneity first recognises their common fight against marginalisation. Both tribes have invaluable traditional knowledge that is in danger from modernisation. Second, the framework encourages Mutual Cultural Resilience. This entails an ongoing dialogue through art and heritage exchange, such as comparing Orang Asli wood carving to Yunnan textiles, which leads to innovation and confirmation of traditions. Knowledge sharing about traditional ecological practices is mutually beneficial. Finally, the framework facilitates Heritage Mobilisation for Socioeconomic Empowerment. By working together to develop models for ethical cultural tourism, communities can commercialise their culture while maintaining control over their intellectual property and receiving equitable economic benefits. Essentially, the framework goes beyond simple cultural exchange to construct a proactive, shared future in which the unique legacy of the Orang Asli and Yunnan's indigenous peoples serves as a source of resilience, innovation, and equitable development.Downloads
